Maoist violence struck again in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, with the fatal shooting of a former village sarpanch in Bijapur district, reigniting fear across remote tribal settlements already on edge amid continuing insurgent activity.
The victim, Bhima Madkam, was killed on Tuesday in his agricultural field at Kawargatta village under Pamed Police Station. According to villagers who witnessed the attack, armed Maoists arrived suddenly and opened fire, killing him on the spot before fleeing into the surrounding forest.

Residents said several villagers were present nearby when the attack took place. Madkam, who had returned earlier in the day from Bacheli, was engaged in routine farm work when he was targeted. Locals maintained that the method and timing of the attack strongly point to Maoist involvement.

Police officials confirmed the killing late on Tuesday evening but did not immediately attribute responsibility. However, villagers asserted that Madkam had been on the Maoists’ radar for years and had narrowly escaped an earlier attack in the past.
Due to the village’s remoteness and security constraints, the body could be brought out only after nightfall. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday, after which the final rites will be conducted.
The killing has cast a heavy pall over Kawargatta and nearby villages, with residents expressing fear over renewed civilian targeting. Many said the incident had revived memories of earlier years when elected representatives and community figures were frequently attacked.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Additional security forces have been deployed in the area, and combing operations are underway to trace those responsible. The recent violence underscores the persistent threat posed by Maoist groups in parts of southern Chhattisgarh, even as security forces continue sustained counter-insurgency operations aimed at restoring long-term stability in the region.
